In her first interview since the Manchester shooting, Ariana Grande appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on May 1st. She dominated the show with a revealing interview, as well as a fun night of singing and games. During her time as the only guest on the show, she played a game called, “Wheel of Musical Impressions” where she took turns with Fallon mixing up songs to new styles, as well as performed her new hit single “No Tears Left to Cry.”
Towards the end of the show she sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the topic fans have been dying to hear more about, when her next album will be coming out. Ariana Grande announced during the interview that she would be coming out with a new album this summer. The album, entitled, “Sweetener,” is reported to be produced by Max Martin and Pharrell, two producers well known for successful releases in the past.
Max Martin has been a part of Ariana Grande’s work in the past and has had a hand in some of her biggest hits. He helped with both “Problem,” a 2014 hit that earned her the largest debut amount for a person under 21, and “Into You” which hit the top 100 list.
Before this interview, Ariana Grande had been keeping fairly quiet about the album, known as “AG4” or “Ariana Grande’s 4th” to fans. Her silence was broken only recently by a few teasers in April on Twitter, this led to the name of a track on the new album, and released a song from it, “No Tears Left to Cry.” Before this teaser, she hadn’t written anything since December, a long stretch of time for any celebrity.
Despite this being kept relatively quiet, Ariana Grande seemed delighted for a chance to “Spill the tea” on her new album. Even though the interview was just a few minutes long, she managed to cover a startling number of revelations in that time. According to her, the album is called Sweetener because it is about bringing a little sweetness to life. Many fans speculated on social media after the interview, that it may also be inspired by the tragedy that happened during her Manchester performance.
Ariana Grande was visibly excited to talk about the album, and was happy to share several exciting details during the interview. Ariana Grande hinted at a possible release date. The forthcoming album may be released July 20th, as Ariana Grande plans to do something exciting on the 20th of every month leading up to the release, and there are only 3 20ths left. This may mean it will be released July 20th, or August 20th, depending on how her words are interpreted. May 20th she plans to perform at the Billboard awards. April 20th she released “No Tears Left to Cry.” The June 20th event has yet to be released.
Jimmy Fallon asked her about some of the songs on the album, and Ariana obliged with several names. The album will include songs entitled R.E.M., Light is coming, God is a Woman, and Rain Drops. Her grandmother, whom she calls “Nonna,” likes God is a Woman best. Ariana says that her Nonna has asked to hear the song several times. The song’s title drew laughs from the audience.
During the interview, Ariana also revealed that her fans were right in thinking that a piece of paper in the video for “No Tears Left to Cry,” was in fact a track list for the new album. This Easter Egg hidden in the music video gives us several more possible song titles, but since Ariana used air quotes when describing them, so it is possible that the list isn’t quite what it seems to be.
She also mentioned that the intro to Sweetener has an unexpected and interesting story behind it. The intro is a cover for a very old song, “An Angel Cried” by the 4 Seasons. It turns out her grandfather was friends with one of the writers of the original song, linking it to her in a very unique way.
Ariana Grande was emotional when Jimmy Fallon brought up the attack at Ariana’s concert at the Manchester Arena, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people. She wiped tears from her eyes as Mr. Fallon praised her for the fundraising concert, One Love Manchester, that raised 13 million dollars for those effected by the tragedy. 50,000 people attended the sold out concert, which was organized and performed by Ariana in just 13 days.
Ariana also gave several thousand tickets to the concert goers there for the tragedy, as well as personally visited survivors in the hospital and the family of some of the deceased. Her efforts went above and beyond what many similar singers would do in the same situation and shows the kind of person she is.
At the end of the interview, Jimmy Fallon also read a short passage from her essay on the topic. The passage he read said, “We won’t let hate win. Our response to this violence must be to come closer together, to help each other, to love more, to sing louder, and to live more kindly and generously than we did before.”
Ariana Grande’s response in the wake of the tragedy was beautiful proof of this, and Ariana received cheers for her efforts. She was clearly overcome by Jimmy Fallon’s comments, and could only thank him for his words.
The interview closed on that note, but fans everywhere were kept busy discussing her reveals long after she left the Tonight Show. Ariana Grande has not released an album in over a year, making this new one extremely exciting for new fans.
Her last album, “Dangerous Woman,” released in 2016, received a Grammy nomination and hit #2 on the top 200 list. Three of the songs on it ended up being top 20 singles. With this kind of record, it has now set the standards high for what may be her best album yet!
